McConnell Collection

This bulk of the material in this collection relates to materials used in the reservations department for customer service activities and tourism at the former Pan American Airlines (Pan Am). The collection consists of binders, training documents, customer service forms, business documents/forms, employment documents, calendars, flight schedules, travel pamphlets, magazines, souvenirs, newsletters, news wires, as well as a small assortment of documents pertaining to National Airlines. The most useful documentation, however, are the papers that give a glimpse into the changing nature of Pan Am’s business operations of the late 1980s and early 90s before its permanent closure in December 1991. There is not a plethora of documentation in regard to its closure, but enough subtle (piecemeal) information to create a picture making it clear that Pan Am was beginning to struggle while seeking to maintain the confidence of its customer base. This can be realized through some employee documents, newsletters, a bankruptcy notice and etcetera.

The other parts of the collection demonstrate the broad nature and large reach of the former airline’s operations domestically in the United States and around the globe. The collection has been organized thematically through a fonds series organization. Most of the paper collections has been stored in folders in archival storage boxes and other company binders on shelving units by the boxed materials. Some of the binders contain information and training materials for the former Panamac Reservations System that was utilized by the airline.
